Once again it's been a hard week, though not nearly as hard as last week. Today was the first day that hasn't ended in pain and Wednesday the pain was worse than I've had in weeks. Yesterday was frustrating because the pain in my legs kept me from controlling them well and my pedal technique was a mess during my lesson.

But today I'm feeling much better. After doing some reading on FM, I learned that often there is a seretonin deficiency which keeps you from going into the "fourth stage" of sleep--the restorative stage. Last night I took a benadryl and slept hard. I think that sleep healed me a lot because not only have I not been in pain at all today, but I've been going full steam since 8:00 a.m. and am only a little tired. I've also walked all over campus today, including a half-hour walk for kicks while talking to Kilby on the phone and though the little nagging structural instability in my knees was back after that walk, there's still no pain.

So I am very thankful.

Tonight I go see the St. Olaf performance of Taming of the Shrew with Carrie, for our class. Tomorrow is the last time I'll hear Pat Morgan preach. Happily, two of my friends from school (Carrie and Kara) are coming with me.

This coming week I have so much going on. Hopefully I'll be stronger yet. Monday I'm playing for chapel and have an exam. Later in the week I have a research paper and a smaller paper due, a hymn composition due, and always the composition for comp classes which are overdue. I am also performing for a master class with one of the leading American organ teachers this Saturday. Monday following I'm going with all the organists to the cities where another famous organist is giving a master class which two of my classmates will perform in.

On top of that are several big concerts coming up--one tomorrow by a bunch of regional men's choirs including Viking (the freshman guys chorus here); Monday Cantorei (Ferg's choir, which I'll be in next year) is doing their main concert of the year. It's cool to be coming up on all the big ensemble performances of the year. I just hope I stay strong enough to attend them. Wednesday night when the terrible pain hit I was in an incredible piano recital (Chopin Sonata and Rachmaninoff Concerto) and had to leave before the Rachmaninoff because of the pain.

Today was exciting: I met with two friends to go over the piece I wrote for horn and soprano (a poem by Kilby). It sounded beautiful and they really like it and I think it's going to be a successful performance. It was fun to hear other people making my music. This is the first time I've heard anything I've written here and it was really special.
