Four weeks from now I will be home for three glorious months. Hard to believe this semester has passed so fast. Hard to believe, too, it has been so long and full and hard.
My health's been progressively better as I learn to take things in stride; also, I think, as the weather gets better. I have as many good days as bad days now, or more. Sleep is like a game of strategy now since what sort of sleep I get and how much and when usually decides whether it'll be a good day or bad day. Yesterday was bad. Today started bad and ended good, which is unusual. I'm hoping tomorrow will be all good. But good or bad, I'm learning to roll with the punches and have been a bit more even-keeled the past couple weeks because of it.
In the next two weeks and three days (until my last final exam) these are the things I must do, just to list the major things:
Finish my organ jury pieces and play them both in studio classes
Perform my organ jury
Memorize the Studio A stoplist
Finish working on Debussy's Arabesque and three movements of a Bach French suite for piano
Perform Debussy for my piano jury
Play for thirteen other juries
Write five movements of a Baroque dance suite "with a twist" for my final comp project
Write a single-pitch piece for composition
Listen to hours of 20th century music to prepare for an aural final exam
Finish reading a stupid novel
Write a ten-minute script adaptation of a scene from said novel
Collaborate with three other people to perform one of our adaptations for class
Take final exams in theory and ear training and composition
Have a heart-to-heart with Ferg about composition.
Last but not least, I have three movie-watching dates with various friends... :)
That's not a list to sneeze at. Following that I have to pack, move out of my room and into storage, and head home. I'm staying extra time to work in the music office, play for my church through May, and enjoy a last few quiet days of spring on St. Olaf's gorgeous campus.
Spring has arrived here and it is breathtakingly beautiful. Tonight as I walked across campus (in a sleeveless shirt!) I caught a whiff of a tree in bloom. Everything is bright green finally--the leaves have emerged just in the past three days. Trees are blossoming, too, and tulips and daffodils are popping up everywhere. And the sun rises around 6 and sets just before 9, making for long, long days of spring light and sunny, breezy, amazing weather. I eat as many meals as possible outside and covet my friends who have instruments they can practice outside in the courtyard.
This summer will be working, resting, exercising, and getting ahead on coursework for the fall. I have decided to postpone second-semester composition for a semester. So this fall I'll be taking organ, theory, ear training, music history, instrumentation, woodwind class, and poetry. In January it will be electronic music and in the spring it will be organ, theory, ear training, composition, music history, brass class, percussion class, and conducting.
And now I must get some sleep.
